Global District Energy in Cities Initiative

A multi-stakeholder partnership and pool of expertise that promotes the transfer of policy, finance and technical know-how

Global District Energy in Cities Initiative

Recognizing that modern district energy helps cities meet energy efficiency, zero energy building and renewable energy objectives, the District Energy in Cities Initiative supports local governments to build know-how and implement enabling policies that accelerate investment in low-carbon and climate-resilient district energy systems.

As one of six accelerators of the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform, the District Energy in Cities Initiative aims to double the rate of energy efficiency improvements for heating and cooling in buildings by 2030. It addresses the urgent need to reduce energy demand and shift to efficient and low carbon sources consistent with global climate and energy ambitions.

The Global District Energy in Cities Initiative provides capacity building and technical assistance to local governments and their partners to develop enabling policies, address barriers, unlock investment and scale-up modern district energy in cities. The initiative is working to raise awareness on the opportunities and multiple benefits of district energy.

To create a market for district energy, the initiative:

Increases awareness of the potential of district energy and its role in achieving multiple socio-economic and environmental benefits.

Demonstrates viability through pilot projects, strengthening the capacities of city planners, policymakers and stakeholders to implement district energy projects.

Creates an enabling regulatory framework to unlock private sector investment and ensure sustainable implementation.

Replicate its approach in different cities in the same region to foster industry growth.

Exchanging experiences between city and country partners on district energy innovation and best practice through a cities-for-cities twinning process.

Meet some of the cities in the Initiative

The initiative currently provides technical support to cities in four pilot countries (Chile, China, India and Serbia) and ten replication countries (Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Egypt, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Russia, the Seychelles and Tunisia).
