Global Climate Action Summit

San Francisco, 12-14 September 2018 #StepUp2018

Global Climate Action Summit: How will you meet the climate challenge?

The Global Climate Action Summit brings together local and regional governments, businesses and citizens from around the world to show how far they have come to meet the climate challenge, while igniting a global wave of commitments that spur nations and climate stakeholders to step up their ambition.

These commitments focus on five GCAS challenge areas: healthy energy systems, inclusive economic growth, sustainable communities, land stewardship and transformative climate investments.
ICLEI and our partners are challenging local governments, regional governments and all climate stakeholders to show what they will do to take climate action forward. As one of the lead organizations advancing the One Planet Charter released in 2017, ICLEI strongly supports the sectoral commitments focusing on urban planning, mobility, buildings, waste and renewable energy as part of the the sustainable communities challenge area.
At GCAS, ICLEI is calling on local and regional governments to commit to 100 percent renewable energy, take steps towards climate neutrality, develop investment-ready, transformative climate projects and engage in the challenges led by our partners.

Join the key GCAS challenges

Advance climate action through systems change, join the ICLEI network

ICLEI challenges local and regional governments to tackle climate change through a full systems approach. This is possible through our five interconnected development pathways, a framework we use to design integrated sustainability solutions that cut across multiple elements of an urban system, from energy and water infrastructure and to transport and buildings. This is all laid out in the ICLEI Montréal Commitment and Strategic Vision, our roadmap for sustainable urban development.

Commit to renewable energy, join our 100% RE Cities and Regions Network

ICLEI challenges local and regional governments to commit to and deliver on 100 percent renewable energy targets. The 100% RE Cities and Regions Network accelerates this process, bringing networking, peer learning, technical guidance and the latest renewable energy research and findings to participants. To get involved, local and regional governments need to either approve a 100 percent renewable energy target in at least one sector or have a clear interest in exploring a target for their jurisdiction.

Close the finance gap, apply to the TAP - the local climate action incubator

ICLEI calls for local and regional governments worldwide to develop transformative, finance-ready projects by submitting their transformative climate projects to the Transformative Actions Program (TAP). The TAP catalyzes capital flows for low emission and climate-resilient development, while providing support to local and regional governments to develop climate project concepts into low risk, high feasibility, high impact sustainable infrastructure projects.

Commit to climate neutrality

ICLEI is calling on our network of local and regional governments to achieve climate neutral government operations and infrastructure before mid-century. By advancing towards this target, local and regional governments demonstrate leadership where they have operational control, and can, as a result, spur broader, community-scale action and greater ambition from national governments. This call originates from the ICLEI Montréal Commitment, our roadmap to sustainable urban development.

Apply to the Global Climate City Challenge

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the world’s largest global coalition of cities and local governments voluntarily committed to actively combatting climate change and transitioning to a low carbon and climate resilient economy, and the EIB, the world’s largest multilateral provider of climate finance and the bank of the EU, have launched a Global Climate City Challenge to help turn climate action commitments into reality. As part of the Global Urbis initiative launched at the 2017 One Planet Summit, the Global Climate City Challenge will offer to a selected number of pilot cities advisory services and support in securing financing for bold climate projects.
