On 20 September 2019, millions of people will walk out of their workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. The city of Bonn and ICLEI, led by Mayor of Bonn and ICLEI President Ashok Sridharan, are putting their support behind the strike.
The city of Bonn is enabling employees to use time credits or holidays to leave the workplace and participate in the strike. "I would be delighted if many colleagues from the city administration set an example for global climate protection" by participating, said Sridharan.
ICLEI is among a growing number of organizations and private companies that are supporting the Global Climate Strike. The ICLEI World Secretariat is also enabling staff to join strike activities. As President of the ICLEI network, Mayor Sridharan and the City of Bonn are setting an example for how municipalities around the world can enable participation. Action can take many forms and the example of Bonn can inspire broader engagement in this important moment of global activism.
Youth activists have already been leading the way and walking out of their classrooms every Friday. Now, they are asking the world to join them. Mayor Sridharan is a committed supporter of the Fridays for Future movement. "Young people are taking to the streets for a good cause and demonstrating for all our futures. These young people are our future - and we are called upon to support their cause."
Mayor Sridharan himself will also take part in the demonstration, "but not as part of my service" he emphasizes. Through personal action, we can “show our determination to work with our governments to make the Paris climate decisions a reality. For this we need the support of all - professional and private".
The City of Bonn is continuing to accelerate local climate action. Following the City Council’s Declaration of a Climate Emergency, Sridharan is committed to pressing ahead with the implementation of the Integrated Climate Protection Concept with the goal of achieving climate neutrality.
The Global Climate Strike will kick off a critical week of action and high-level meetings in New York that will shape action on climate and sustainability for the next decade. As President of ICLEI, Mayor Sridharan will attend the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on 23 September to ensure that local and national governments cooperate more closely in this important field.
