ICLEI’s South America and European Secretariats have established a memorandum of understanding with the Center for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE), an organization linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) of Brazil.
The partnership was signed on 11 March, 2020 during the third International Seminar on Nature-Based Solutions: The challenge of water and cities. The event was hosted by MCTIC and CGEE and the partnership formalizes the institutions' commitment to provide governments, civil society and companies with knowledge and training on nature-based solutions with the aim of creating a resilient and sustainable urban future.
"We saw the possibility for the observatory to officially anchor this very relevant nature-based solutions agenda, translating it more and more into the Brazilian context ", said Sophia Picarelli, manager of climate change and biodiversity at ICLEI South America.
Daniela Rizzi, an Officer focused on Nature Based Solutions, Green Infrastructures and Biodiversity work within the Sustainable Resources, Climate and Resilience team at ICLEI Europe, highlighted that the partnership is an opportunity to find synergies between projects. “The observatory is collecting information about what happens in Brazil, creating a database and working with indicators. So, it is a huge contribution to all nature-based solutions work in the country,” she said.
The seminar brought together national and international experts, including technicians and municipal secretaries, representatives of ministries, academics, activists and civil society.
During the event, the Connecting Nature Project offered an UrbanByNature Workshop entitled ‘Nature-Based Solutions and Entrepreneurship’ that focused on small and medium-sized Brazilian companies and self-employed professionals who work with nature-based solutions. Companies are an important ally to ensure that solutions based on nature are implemented in such a way that their social, economic and environmental benefits can be fully enjoyed.
In this workshop, participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of nature-based companies, exchange experiences on the successes and challenges of the sector and reflect on the opportunities that a nature-based solutions cluster of companies could offer.
