Sustainable urban innovation in the age of automation

The current trend of automation and digitization, often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, has a deep and growing impact on future urban development. As global connectivity and trade continue to expand, cities and urban regions will be the nodes of digital development. These trends will influence the way in which cities develop spatially and economically, how they manage resources and infrastructures and provide key services to their citizens in an inclusive manner.

To better understand these interconnections and to advance inter-regional and city-business collaboration, ICLEI has partnered with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to support the “BRIDGE for Cities 4.0” event on 3-4 September 2019 in Vienna. The fourth edition of the event will focus on how the Fourth Industrial Revolution can foster urban innovation in cities.

ICLEI’s Urban Transition Alliance brings together industrial legacy cities that are working towards a sustainable future. At BRIDGE for Cities 4.0, Urban Transition Alliance cities Katowice, Dortmund and Essen will be featured as good practice examples of how industrial legacy cities have embraced transitions that led to new opportunities in digitalization but in a way that prioritizes the needs of their local populations. Last year, the Urban Transition Alliance built a roadmap for approaching post-industrial decision-making; now the cities are turning their attention on how to increase equity in their urban transition initiatives.

ICLEI is also supporting UNIDO and its partners to matchmake cities and regions with business stakeholders to address these key issues together. Through three CiBiX Exchange sessions at BRIDGE for Cities 4.0, global public and private representatives will connect on key partnership opportunities emerging from Industry 4.0 development. In addition to CiBiX exchanges, the Mayors Roundtable at BRIDGE for Cities 4.0 will feature over 25 city and regional government leaders from around the globe for a high-level policy dialogue on industry 4.0. Each city will share their key priorities and interests on how they plan to utilize the 4th Industrial Revolution to accelerate urban innovation, achieve the 2030 Agenda and improve citizen wellbeing.

Interested cities, businesses and key industry 4.0 stakeholders are warmly invited to join BRIDGE for Cities 4.0 which is expected to gather around 600 participants. Registration details:
