Representing Brazilian cities, ICLEI South America will be a permanent member of the Forum, which will be held monthly and will systematize knowledge, seeking to build solutions to the challenges encountered in cities.
In this sense, the Permanent Forum reinforces the link between the initiative and the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Among them, most critical are the 11th - making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable - by stimulating the creation of sustainable cities and communities; the 13th - taking urgent action to combat climate changes and its impacts - by promoting action against global climate change; the 17th - strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development - proposing partnerships and means of implementation for sustainable development, based on a governance structure; and also the 5th - achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls - prioritizing gender equality and working with cities where mayors are women.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is the world's largest alliance of cities and local governments voluntarily committed to fighting climate change. In Latin America and the Caribbean, where the initiative is implemented with the support of the IUC-LAC program, funded by the European Union, more than 400 cities are part of the project.
