The Necessity of Local Leadership Engagement in Implementing Impactful Food-Water-Energy ‘Nexus’ Solutions
Authors: Evan Berman, Laura Valente de Macedo, Pourya Salehi
Food, water, and energy systems underlie and constitute major resources in urban settings. The interconnectedness among different ecosystems, especially in providing water, energy, and food, has now become a global concern that is further exacerbated by global climate change. Persistent issues such as waste management, food insecurity, and energy dependency require new and innovative solutions. This policy brief outlines a framework for leaders of subnational governments to break down current, ‘siloed’ barriers and form effective solutions for change by managing the interplay between food, water, and energy systems. Grounded in academic research and case study insights, this policy brief offers practical and actionable knowledge to help local leaders implement innovative nexus initiatives.
