ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

Since the occupation of the Amazon region, with the exploitation of its hydroelectric and mining potential, the expansion of the agricultural frontier and the road network, colonization projects and various migratory movements within and outside the region have been observed. As a result, there was an accelerated expansion of several cities, which are characterized by low levels of basic services and infrastructure, with low qualification of the workforce and entrepreneurship. The lack of similar experiences has led to unappropriated models of land use and occupation in these cities, which are inadequate for the region's reality. The need for a differentiated and sustainable development model in the region has become evident. The lack of successful models has caused a lack of investment in modern, dynamic and high-value economic activities, as well as in social infrastructure. This factor generated a circle configured by the absence of good projects and the replicability of success cases, largely due to the lack of information, dissemination and exchange of local experiences. Successful experiences have no traction and do not multiply. In a context of imminent threats to policies to reduce deforestation and the spread of extensive fires in the region, responses arise from the perspective of cooperation that need support to be developed with quality. To this end, ICLEI South America and the International Institute for Sustainability join the initiative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, within the scope of the Regional Program for Energy Security and Climate Change in Latin America, to establish the Forum of Pan-Amazonian Cities.

What we are achieving

The Pan-Amazonian Cities Forum (FCPA) offers a lasting mechanism for strengthening decentralized regional cooperation, shedding light on regional initiatives for sustainability. The main objectives of the initiative are: -Establish a platform for municipal governments, specifically through the Secretariats of Planning and Development; -Promote the exchange of knowledge, practices and models of sustainable development between subnational Amazonian governments and the subsequent dissemination of experiences at the regional level; -Establish a cooperation mechanism to position Amazonian cities as global references in sustainable urban development, in which managers collaborate mutually in the implementation of monitoring measures and efforts to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Work Agenda - Priority areas: 1. Bioeconomy and green jobs 2. Cities that promote the sustainable use of the land, the reduction of deforestation and its relations with traditional peoples
