What we are doing
The renewable energy resources of Benin, if tapped especially through off-grip decentralized systems, have the potential to provide enough access to modern energy for the entire country's energy-poor population, and also enable local communities to benefit from the ensuing employment creation as well as other socio-economic benefits that can boost these local economies. Yet, the movement in transfer of the relevant technologies in Benin is rather slow, which is partly due to the poor local capacity, knowledge and awareness of these solutions. Local capacity building therefore needs to be accelerated to support, connect and capture gains from ongoing efforts that are critical to enable actions in the transition towards sustainable energy access and security.
To address the need for sustainable energy access and technical capacity, the GBE Partnerships opportunity is an extension of the existing partnership between ICLEI and ANCB to strategically include the Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement Bénin (JVE Benin), an environmental NGO working with youth, women and other marginalized groups, in order to leverage newly identified opportunities to further address existing capacity gaps by building local capacities specifically for operating and maintaining solar PV and biodigester energy systems.

How we are tracking
One capacity building module each developed for 1) Solar PV under Partnership A and 2) Biodigester under Partnership B.
At least 30 people successfully attended the training workshop under each partnership. Thus, improved technical capacities and know-how in terms of installation, operation and maintenance of Solar PVs and Biodigester Systems among the local populations in Benin.

What we are achieving
The proposed partnership is aimed at contributing to ongoing efforts in Benin towards closing the existing capacity gaps, particularly at the local government, communities, and grass root levels, also in line with relevant national policies for renewable energy. The partnerships are expected to strategically leverage the key competencies of each partner to ensure a well-targeted intervention that aligns with development and use of renewable energies from sources that are suitable to Benin’s context.
The entire partnership proposed and the outlined activities are all situated and linked to a TAP project proposal submitted in 2020, to enable sustainable energy access for rural communities in Benin. This partnership is therefore set up to help tackle the poor technical capacity challenges among the key stakeholders to enable their participation towards the end goal of energy access through renewable sources.
