What we did
The pilot project addresses the Indonesian Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and explores opportunities and the
potential to raise the level of ambition through the sub-national contribution. This project was announced at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, in December 2022, in the joint session of the GIZ and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, in collaboration with the NDC Partnership (NDCP). The project was defined in
response to the request of the Indonesian government to the NDCP, also building on lessons learned from the NDCP Insight Brief (July 2022) developed by GIZ Sector Project Cities on Addressing support gaps for sustainable urbanization in the NDC Partnership.

What we achieved
This fast-paced project engages with local governments to explore the “cities” perspective and interests to assess the potential subnational contribution to the NDC. Stakeholder dialogues will be supported by robust assessments, leading to recommendations to the Indonesian government for its consideration. Further, knowledge on the topic of multilevel governance and lessons learned will be captured and widely disseminated.
