EcoLogistics Community

A community that advocates for the awareness of sustainable urban freight and helps committed cities accelerate the implementation.

decor

Global freight demand will triple between 2015 and 2050 based on the current development, exerting pressure on cities’ current infrastructure and urban fabric. Founded in 2020, the ICLEI EcoLogistics Community serves as the first global city network committed to a sustainable urban freight future. The Community leads in the development of sustainable urban freight in their cities and drives global actions on the international stage through collaborative exchanges, action plans, and stakeholder engagements.

Through a service-oriented structure, collective learning exercises, peer-to-peer exchanges, and joint activities, the Community advocates the awareness of sustainable urban freight and helps committed cities accelerate the implementation. The Community also aims to support lessons learned on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through ecologistics.

Taoyuan City is the Chair and Host of the Community in 2020 and 2021. As the leading logistics hub in Taiwan, it aims to use the integration of technology, policies and planning as a vehicle for environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the urban freight sector.

Aims

Through the EcoLogistics Community, ICLEI aims to influence sustainable urban logistics policies and plans by advancing effective regulatory, planning, and technological instruments. The Community strengthens institutional capacity and facilitates collaborations and conversations through multi-stakeholder participation and demonstration project implementation. With the support of ICLEI and partners, the Community establishes mechanisms that allow peer-to-peer learning and accelerates ambitious actions at the local level.

Activities

As the first global city network focusing on the sustainability and the innovation of urban freight, the initiative aims to support committed cities to achieve ecologistics ambition. Through the EcoLogistics Community, participants:

  • Establish a working group with interested peer cities and partners to facilitate peer-to-peer exchange and contribute to the activities and the knowledge hub on sustainable urban logistics in cities
  • Gain a holistic understanding of Taoyuan’s urban freight by developing an EcoLogistics Index (ELI) performance measurement system for ecologistics in cities
  • Form and engage multi-stakeholder groups to develop and implement goals and meaningful forms of actions for implementation
  • Implement five demonstration projects on sustainable urban logistics
  • Develop a Sustainable Urban Logistics Plans for Taoyuan
  • Influence national freight policies by providing recommendations
  • Shape an overview of global developments and stimulate unconventional solutions locally
