Our networkAn ICLEI Member since 1995, the City of Turku, Finland’s oldest city, sits on the southwest coast at the mouth of the Aura River. Under the leadership of Mayor Minna Arve, ICLEI First Vice President, Turku aims for carbon neutrality by 2029 and to become a resource-wise society by 2040. The City has embraced the circular economy through a bottom-up approach, ensuring its circular economy transition is fair and inclusive. Notably, the Circular Turku project, developed with support from ICLEI and Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, led to the 2021 Circular Turku Roadmap.
During the ICLEI World Congress 2024, held in June in São Paulo, Brazil, Turku joined the Malmö Commitment on Inclusive and Equitable Communities, pledging to embed social equity at the heart of local urban sustainable development. Spearheaded by Mayor Arve, Finland also joined COP28’s Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP), showcasing its commitment to strengthening collaboration across all levels of government to deliver effective climate action.
MoreMayor Katja Dörner of Bonn, Germany, is a leading voice in local and global climate action, actively shaping sustainability policies through her role in ICLEI’s Global Executive Committee and her advocacy in international forums such as the UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs). Mayor Dörner aims to make Bonn climate-neutral by 2035, advance sustainable mobility with more bike lanes and a car-free inner city, tackle inequalities, and promote affordable housing, driving a socially just and ambitious local action toward climate neutrality.
At the national level, she has pushed the German Association of Cities to join CHAMP (Cities’ Ambition Multilevel Partnership), advocating for stronger municipal involvement in shaping climate policies. She has recently joined the new Mayors Alliance for the European Green Deal which brings together mayors who are committed for a sustainable transition.
The ICLEI São Paulo Strategic Vision 2024 – 2030 outlines our new vision for how the ICLEI network will advance sustainable urban development worldwide.
