Facilitating the energy transition in local and regional governments in Argentina, Indonesia, and Kenya through multilevel governance, capacity building, policy support and technical assistance.
Sustainable Energy
Our mission
The Sustainable Energy team supports local and regional governments to drive the transition to sustainable energy, aiming for net-zero emissions and climate neutrality. We help integrate sustainable energy into their development plans, boost renewable energy adoption, and align with NDCs and SDGs. Through collaboration with global and local partners, we empower cities to enhance energy access, security, resilience, and reduce energy poverty.
Our work touches on the entire spectrum of sustainable energy systems, from generation to energy efficiency, conservation, and sufficiency, and shifting energy demand across the heating/cooling, transport, and other sectors. However, our focus is always on how local and regional governments can address these themes in their communities, using the authorities and resources at their disposal.
How do we achieve our vision?
Through our work, we accompany local and regional governments on their sustainable energy transition journey, offering support through:
- Capacity building: Empowering local and regional governments with knowledge and tools to take advantage of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions, and to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
- Policy recommendations: Offering advice for policies that can support the deployment of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency measures in a community.
- Technical assistance: Supporting the development of bankable renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
- Engaging stakeholders and advocacy: Advocating for more decentralization and channeling of resources to local and regional governments to undertake energy solutions in their communities.
- Monitoring: Facilitating reporting to platforms such as CDP-ICLEI Track.
- Knowledge creation: Sharing best practices and innovative solutions and approaches for local and regional governments in the energy space, including lessons learned from project experiences.
- Project implementation: Implementing projects focusing on energy strategies and solutions for local and regional governments.
Our projects
A collaborative project between the European Union and nine African countries (Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania) to provide energy access technologies and business models that are easily replicable and generate local opportunities for economic development and social cohesion in Africa.
A global platform that promotes urban sustainability and facilitates climate-neutral transitions. UTMC helps cities to bridge knowledge and capacity gaps by linking cities with policy, implementation, and funding solutions via exchanges that transcend borders.
Supporting the transition to sustainable energy by enhancing institutional frameworks and technical capacities in local governments across South Asia, and fostering exchanges with other pioneering cities globally.
Supporting awareness-raising, outreach, and capacity building to spur local and regional governments in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to lead the renewables-based transition in their communities.
Supporting capacity-building, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge creation regarding public-private partnerships in renewable energy projects in Benin.
