What we did
Local government can contribute to both the Paris Agreement and local climate ambition to seek a transition to a low carbon future while meeting climate adaptation challenges to build a more climate resilient society. At the local government level many different and sometimes competing initiatives are available interested councils. While the programs themselves all have merit and a place in the Australian political and environmental landscape more could be done to bring them together for more effective resourcing and delivery. Participation in a coherent and robust approach offers local government and their communities a means to measure strategic approaches, report consistently whether at local, subnational or national levels and share experiences, results and ambition. The SPIPA supports an Australian National consultation to raise awareness of the GCoM and seek support at National and State government level to recognize and support local climate action based around GCoM common reporting framework .The SPIPA is a European Commission-backed program targeted at G20 countries to support Paris implementation.
