ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

North America is the most active region for the Compact of Mayors and strategic to the new Global Covenant. ICLEI successfully recruited 80% of the North American Compact cities and continues to support the cities towards compliance through technical support and advisory services, such as the ICLEI USA Fall 2016 session, which will actively support 21 U.S. cities towards GPC compliance by December. It is important that the IUC be managed in a manner that does not result in "campaign fatigue" that many cities feel as they are approached from multiple initiatives and asked to have their mayor commit to "this or that." For the success of the new Global Covenant, there needs to be a seamless blending and well communicated alignment of the Compact and the Covenant. Thus, this consortium is best positioned to ensure that success. For example, ICLEI Canada collaborated with FCM to establish a Compact of Mayors working group to guide Canadian PCP member cities towards Compact compliance. PCP continuously works with Compact and Covenant authorities to establish a PCP program alignment

What we are achieving

The objective of the IUC programme is to contribute to improve international urban policy diplomacy and increase decentralized cooperation on sustainable urban development and climate change through a focus on sustainable energy. In North America the focus of the project is 1) on peering North American cities with European one so that they can learn from each other on how to tackle their GHG emissions and 2) on providing technical support to GCOM members.
