What we are doing
The UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and its Korean version (K-SDG) 12 aim at ensuring ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ to enhance global sustainability.
To achieve ‘Responsible Consumption and Production,’ South Korea has implemented policies to promote green public procurement and mandated public institutes to purchase green products. However, the current green procurement rate of public institutes stands at only about 50%.
In response, KEITI(Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute) and ICLEI Korea office have conducted the ‘Green Public Procurement Project for Local Governments’ to assist local governments in implementing green procurement and promote the consumption and production of green products

How we are tracking
The number of local governments participating in the project has grown to 12 metropolitan(in 2024) and provincial governments, from 3 in 2019.
In 2023, the GPP performance of participating local governments increased by 11% compared to 2022
In 2023, 5 network events with 10 cities, 10 policy workshop with 106 participants, 6 capacity-building programs with 276 participants

What we are achieving
To enhance the implementation of green public procurement, local governments receive support through three activities: Network, Policy Workshop and Capacity-building
(Networks) Conduct a regular network meeting every two months with the participation of all the involved local governments to share project progress and achievements
(Policy Workshop) Policy Workshop for lower-level local governments within each participating local governmentto provide consulting services aimed at enhancing GPP
(Capacity-building on GPP Policies) Provide trainings tailored for local government officers responsible for GPP about the concept and importance of GPP
