What we are doing
Focusing on Kiribati, the project builds resilience to common challenges faced by Small Island Developing States in the Pacific region, such as remoteness, climate change and pandemic impacts. South Tarawa, Kiribati, is at particular risk of rising sea levels, and the surrounding waters are subject to severe ecological damage. Kiribati has the lowest level of GDP per capita in the Pacific, with a lack of paid work or income generating activities to support the growing population of South Tarawa, and poor health arising from loss of local food resources and lack of land.

What we are achieving
By developing new models combining income generation, ecological health, coastal defence, improved food security and economic self-reliance, it will reduce dependence on external supplies and services. Two urban local councils will develop, adopt and initiate the implementation of Climate and COVID Resilience Plans (CCRPs). This promotes inclusive and sustainable community-based development aligned with national policies and programs. Self-reliance will be enhanced through improved sustainable livelihood opportunities, which contribute towards improved food security and environmental protection. Driving this project through traditional governance systems will demonstrate how enhanced participation and collaboration at all levels of government and society accelerate sustainable development.
