As part of the panel organized in the Multilevel Action & Urbanization Pavilion on 20 November, ICLEI and UCCI (Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities) the two networks, together with Ninni Ikkala Nyman, from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Renato Nalini, Executive Secretary for Climate Change at São Paulo City Hall, presented the “IberAtlas” Position Paper.
A strategic initiative that brings together critical data on the problem of heat islands and warming in the main Ibero-American urban centers, as a result of the process of dialogue and exchange between Barcelona, Belém do Pará (ICLEI); Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, Madrid (UCCI), Montevideo, Quito, Rio de Janeiro, San Salvador and São Paulo.
From ICLEI South America, Rodrigo Corradi, Deputy Secretary, highlighted the importance of working in partnership to position the voice of cities at the highest level of climate agendas.
From UCCI, Francisco Mugaburu, Deputy Director of International Relations and Cooperation, highlighted the value of IberAtlas as a concrete product of public policy, analysis and data to raise awareness and influence through cooperation.
Pilar García, UCCI Head of Strategic Projects, pointed out the relevance of this initiative’s focus on people and nature to preserve future generations and build resilient and sustainable cities.
Ibero-America stands out for occupying around 15% of the earth’s surface and 8.7% of the world’s population; it has more than 25% of the tropical forests, a third of the freshwater and half of the planet’s biodiversity (ECLAC; SEGIB), which makes it urgent to promote initiatives such as this Ibero-American Urban Climate Atlas with local and global impact.
