What we are doing
The project is an innovative initiative to mainstream social equity into climate policies in the German cities of Bonn, Heidelberg, Ludwigsburg, Dortmund and Essen. Its central premise is that climate action will be more effective and just if it benefits all social sectors, especially the most vulnerable. Coordinated by ICLEI and supported by Stiftung Mercator, this project seeks inclusive local transformations and fosters the exchange of experiences with leading cities in climate justice. The foundation brings its commitment to equal opportunities, social progress and environmental sustainability, focusing on improving peaceful coexistence and the environment.

What we are achieving
The project aims to:
ensure that climate actions integrate social justice and equitably benefit the population;
align local climate and equity priorities;
develop a robust methodology to scale up this inclusive climate action.
Activities include supporting participating cities in mainstreaming social justice in key areas such as energy, mobility, housing and urban development. In addition, the project foresees the design of specific indicators to measure the social impact of each climate intervention, collaborative learning through best practice exchanges and the creation of knowledge products to guide local governments in their approach to social inclusion.
