In celebration of International Youth Day 2025, ICLEI is proud to launch “Youth Voices”, a new guest op-ed and blog series designed to amplify the perspectives of young climate leaders across the globe.
Beyond being the largest demographic in many cities, today’s youth are among the most climate-conscious generations. They bring fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and tireless energy to sustainability efforts, yet their voices often remain underrepresented in formal decision-making spaces. Aligned with ICLEI’s Vision on Youth Engagement in Global Climate Action, we acknowledge the diversity of young people and their needs across the different corners of the world. We also recognize that this is one of the most vulnerable groups facing the impact of climate change: They require a voice, a partner, and immediate action to safeguard themselves and their future.
This year’s International Youth Day, held under the theme “Local youth actions for the SDGs and beyond,” highlights the crucial role young people play in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world. According to the United Nations, half the planet’s population is 30 years old or younger, and this will grow to 57% by 2030. Notably, 69% of people globally believe that greater youth participation would lead to more inclusive and effective governance.
International Youth Day 2025 also highlights the key role of local and regional governments in empowering youth. As the closest level to communities, they can create inclusive policies, allocate resources, and enable meaningful youth participation in local planning. By partnering with youth and integrating their priorities, governments can help turn ideas into action.
But translating that commitment into practice requires the right tools. To support local and regional governments in implementing effective youth engagement strategies, ICLEI has developed Unlocking the Power of Youth, a practical checklist designed to provide clear, actionable steps for engaging young people within their communities.
In recent years, this age group is becoming increasingly involved and vocal about climate action – whether taking to the streets in premeditated or spontaneous demonstrations, actively participating in exchanges, forums, and programs, or raising their voice in the digital world. However, the gap persists between youth action to combat climate change and decision-making in the political and institutional world.
That’s why ICLEI’s “Youth Voices” series is offering a dedicated space on our CityTalk blog platform for young changemakers to share their experiences, ideas, and visions for the future on urban sustainability. The series will feature contributions from several youth organizations and individuals in the lead-up to COP30, advancing ICLEI’s commitment to inclusive, just, and climate-resilient governance.
The first featured op-ed article, titled “Mind the Gap: How Youth Fall Between Presence and Power in Urban Governance”, is authored by Sonia Ugwunna from the YOUNGO Cities Working Group.
Stay tuned for more stories in the coming weeks as we continue to amplify the voices of young people shaping a just, inclusive, and climate-resilient future. Read the series here.
