San Salvador strengthens resilient mobility through improved road connectivity

decor

The municipality of San Salvador, El Salvador, an ICLEI Member in the Mexico, Central America and Caribbean region, is strengthening mobility and connectivity across its communities through comprehensive improvements to road infrastructure. Among its most significant projects is the rehabilitation of 1.3 kilometres of road connecting El Zapote canton, in the Ayutuxtepeque district, with Constitución Boulevard. The intervention addresses a longstanding infrastructure challenge in the area while improving mobility, road safety, and access to adequate transportation infrastructure for local residents.

Improving connectivity for safer mobility

Reliable road infrastructure is essential to the functioning of communities and cities, providing residents with access to services, education, employment, and other opportunities. In El Zapote canton, poor road conditions have historically affected everyday mobility, as unpaved surfaces make transportation more difficult, particularly during periods of adverse weather.

To address a problem that has affected the area for more than 60 years, the San Salvador administration, in coordination with the Municipal Works Directorate (DOM), is implementing an infrastructure improvement project that will provide a paved roadway with safer and more reliable conditions. The upgraded connection is expected to improve mobility for local residents as well as for communities that rely on this route for their daily journeys.

Infrastructure designed with safety in mind

Improving the road surface is one component of a broader infrastructure intervention that also incorporates measures designed to strengthen safety for people using the roadway. These include the installation of metal barriers at higher-risk points, as well as vertical and horizontal signage to support more orderly movement for vehicles and pedestrians.

The project is expected to benefit more than 1,600 residents of El Zapote canton and surrounding communities that use the road as part of their daily travel. By improving both connectivity and accessibility, the intervention can help create safer mobility conditions throughout the Ayutuxtepeque district.

Beyond facilitating transportation, these improvements can also help reduce some of the barriers that communities face when accessing essential services and opportunities. Reliable connections between neighborhoods and urban areas are particularly important for residents who depend on road infrastructure for everyday activities.

Building more connected and resilient communities

The improvement of the El Zapote road forms part of a broader set of interventions aimed at strengthening road infrastructure across San Salvador, including the renovation of streets and transportation routes in different areas of the municipality.

These actions highlight the importance of continuous investment in infrastructure to support safer, more accessible, and more efficient mobility. Improving road connectivity can also contribute to greater urban resilience by providing communities with infrastructure that is better equipped to withstand changing weather conditions and maintain essential connections.

The El Zapote project illustrates how targeted infrastructure investment can address long-standing local challenges while generating broader benefits for communities. By improving the quality and safety of essential transportation connections, San Salvador is creating conditions that support more inclusive urban development and strengthen the ability of communities to remain connected, accessible, and resilient.
