What we are doing
Local governments are at the frontline of the pressing waste and resource challenges triggered by the linear economy. The linear model of take-make-waste, in which resources are extracted to create products and infrastructures characterized by single use and inefficiency, poses particular waste and resource management challenges and are the source of environmental degradation, pollution and increasing emissions within local jurisdictions.
Positioned at the intersection of production and consumption systems, local governments are the key drivers of change towards circular development. Some jurisdictions are already taking a structured approach; others are engaged in circular development activities, but do not identify those as such. Still others are seeking an entry point that best fits their context. ICLEI Circulars aims to support local governments along their circular journey, no matter their starting point.

What we are achieving
The ICLEI Circulars platform of leading ICLEI network members and practitioners inspires, guides, co-creates and scales up circular economy actions in cities based on the Circular City Actions Framework. ICLEI Circulars is the first global platform for circularity at the local level, and is the one-stop shop for circular development news, resources and events of the ICLEI network. The platform supports ICLEI members throughout the transition to a circular economy, facilitating cities’ circular development journeys by providing support, resources and fostering conversations and collaboration. ICLEI Circulars Leading Cities also benefit from the opportunities for peer-to-peer exchange and learning, through regular convening of Circulars High-Level and Regional Dialogues.
