What we did
In 2020, the City of Bonn planned to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, recognized as the famous son of City of Bonn. The activities aimed to communicate Beethoven’s music, to strengthen and promote innovative projects and to enhance Bonn’s image as the city of Beethoven. Within this scope, BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT was designed as a special awareness raising project on draw attention to the theme of ‘mankind and nature’, represented in the romantic sense in the ‘Pastoral’ music, and to deal actively with today’s urgent questions of environmental protection and global sustainability, and achieving the aims of the Paris Climate Agreement. The project was initially announced at the end of COP23 in 2017 in Bonn. As being seated in Bonn, and considering the many synergies with its mission, ICLEI World Secretariat developed a proposal that connects its members to this project in order to highlight the role of nature, culture, music, in ambitious climate action by local and regional governments. The project was aimed to complement the advocacy and action led by ICLEI in the 2020 which was planned to be the "Super Year for Nature and Climate" due to climate-COP26 in Glasgow and biodiversity-COP15 in Kunming.

The goal is to obtain commitments from 25-50 ICLEI members to support the Project by organizing performances of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, guided by local conditions.
c. Reach out to its network within the global sustainability sphere to promote the Beethoven Pastoral Project and its role in global awareness raising of issues of sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, etc., with a focus on major international meetings
