What we did
With the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 drawing to a close, a new post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is to be agreed on at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The work of cities and subnational governments will be instrumental in all stages of the process, from preparation through implementation of the post-2020 biodiversity framework. They are ready and committed, to take an active role in the post-2020 biodiversity framework and targets, to ensure a ‘whole of government’ approach, to deliver the transformative action that is needed to bend the curve in biodiversity loss and to meet the climate targets. Since 2008, first Global Biodiversity Summits of Local and Subnational Governments, held as official parallel events at the Conferences of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COPs), have resulted in decisions, commitments and project development in regard to the achievement of the three objectives of CBD: the conservation of biological diversity; the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity; and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The Summits provide an opportunity for local and subnational government leaders to engage with the CBD, learn about its functions and policy instruments, contribute to the CBD agenda where appropriate, and communicate their ambitions to their national counterparts and other organizations participating in the COP, and coordinate with peers on their actions and implementation at local and sub-national levels.
