What we are doing
It is clear that in order to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit the rise in global temperatures, we will need to transition to net-zero emissions by mid-century. Having a low-to-zero carbon energy system, based primarily on renewable energies, will be at the core of this transition. Energy Compacts were launched by UN-Energy under the framework of the High Level Dialogue on Energy in September 2021. Their aim is to mobilize commitments and action towards achieving SDG 7 by 2030. UN-Energy will play the role of a 'matchmaker' to bring together those seeking to act, and those with the resources, to be able to realize on the ground these bold ambitions and act now. ICLEI's 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact aims to mobilize local and regional governments committed to increasing the uptake of renewable energy in their territories, setting a number of non-binding but ambitious interim targets, with the ultimate goal of reaching 100% renewable energy use by 2050. ICLEI aims to channel resources directly to local and regional governments through this initiative with UN-Energy's assistance, and help them to act on their ambitious commitments. This activity is aligned with the 100% RE Network, which can also enable action through knowledge sharing and peer exchange.
