What we are doing
Cities are facing unprecedented challenges, in Europe and globally. Building capacity and technical expertise of those working in transport and on urban issues is vital, to ensure cities achieve the EU's target of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and other relevant strategic targets. The project involves the development of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), that will 1) demonstrate how cities can transition their mobility systems to become sustainable, innovative and inclusive; and 2) how they can accelerate transitions to zero-carbon sustainable urban mobility systems. It draws on applied transition concepts, theories and case study examples globally, not currently covered by other MOOCs. The content will be especially relevant for government officials, professionals and innovators, particularly targeting urban applications and policy sectors that generate travel. It offers attendees innovative teaching and Continuing Professional Development methods and materials.

How we are tracking
This four-week Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) focusing on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport and transition to a more environmentally sustainable urban mobility future, will improve the knowledge of current professionals.
Conducted by transport and urban planning experts from the University College London and International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Europe, topics covered include mobility planning and policy, innovation in the sector, and how to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral urban mobility city.
Through videos, articles, podcasts, and discussions with leading academics, experts, policymakers and practitioners, the course will examine key conceptual and practical issues related to urban mobility transition pathways.
Professionals, practitioners, government officials, NGOs, pressure groups, private sector innovators and environmental groups working at the local level and across policy sectors and students interested in environment and transport will find the course useful.

What we are achieving
ICLEI leads Work Package 3, “Dissemination, delivery and exploitation,” in which it carries out communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities to encourage wide use of the MOOC during and beyond its lifetime, and collects participant feedback to help improve these.
ICLEI supports the development of course content; including through Task 1.1, as part of which it reviews user needs’ evaluations/reports and applications to identify training and capacity building interests of cities.
