What we did

The goal of the project was to come up with an approach for accounting for GHG emissions in a local community inventory that could respond to how generation sources on the grid change in different parts of the day and year, with electricity demand also varying. This would provide actionable information to align policies and programs with the needs of transitioning to a zero emissions electric grid, particularly as renewable generation reaches high percentages.

What we achieved

ICLEI wrote a new methodology for the US Community Protocol integrating guidance for hourly accounting of electricity emissions, including identification of available data sources. ICLEI also conducted a pilot with four cities to test and refine the methodology, and delivered several webinars and presentations at in-person events about the method.
