What we are doing

In the last years, noise and air pollution reduction has become a priority for local authorities. Environmental noise is perceived to be an important environmental problem by a growing of Europeans with a significant proportion of the population in cities being regularly affected by it (75% of EU citizens live in cities). The EU Green Paper Future Noise Policy states that around 20 % of the EU’s population suffer from noise levels that health experts consider to be unacceptable, i.e. which can lead to annoyance, sleep disturbance and adverse health effects. At the same time Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 of September 2016 on requirements relating to gaseous and particulate pollutant emission limits defines a lower threshold for pollutant emissions, requiring authorities to look for alternative technologies and energy sources to meet temporary energy demand from construction sites, festivals, harbours, etc. in cities with clean energy. Fuel Cell solutions and hydrogen technologies can become a turnkey technology for providing a zero emission/zero noise power for construction sites and other temporary events with additional benefits for flexibility in application (nigh-time) and life quality in cities. The EVERYWH2ERE project is working to integrate already demonstrated robust PEMFC stacks and low weight intrinsically safe pressurized hydrogen technologies into easy to install, easy to transport FC based transportable gensets to be tested in construction sites, music festivals and urban public events all around Europe. Through that, European cities will become a living lab for the demonstration of Fuel Cell and Hydrogen (FCH) technologies for everyday applications at temporary urban events, and thereby facilitate the promotion and the increase of social acceptability of FCH technologies.

What we are achieving

ICLEI is in particular involved in Replication-Exploitation and Dissemination-Stakeholder Engagement tasks. In order to identify additional markets, feasibility studies will be performed to replicate the concept in specific contexts such as Emergency and Reconstruction sites. Specific business model to foster the commercialization of the FC gensets will be developed also through the commitment of industrial stakeholders and local authorities, who will interact with the consortium through webinars and workshops. In order to foster project replication, EVERYWH2ERE will involve industrial and public stakeholders alike from early on in the project within two dedicated Interest Groups. ICLEI will be leading the regions and cities interest group to promote project replication, the deployment of gensets and advancing urban hydrogen agendas. The presence of ICLEI, will guarantee a strong interaction with EU local authorities which play a fundamental role for the promotion of these technologies through specific policy and regulatory schemes. ICLEI will publish policy guide for upscaling the use of hydrogen gensets in European cities.
