What we are doing
African Cities are increasingly seeing the importance for improving their urban food systems. However, food systems are exceedingly complex multi-actor, multi-disciplinary, multi-sector systems, making it difficult for local governments to understand their roles, or identify strategic actions to improve food security for their residents, while reducing environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions. African local governments have requested support in understanding food system actions, and have requested specialist and peer-to-peer learning to support them.

What we are achieving
Under the banner of the CITYFOOD Network, ICLEI Africa has convened an annual campaign platform called #AfricanCITYFOODmonth, within which local governments and urban food system actors can share the activities they are undertaking to improve African urban food systems. The campaign is implemented on Twitter and Instagram, inviting campaign partners, other organisations and private individuals to share their knowledge and activities. Food-related worskhops and webinars are hosted by ICLEI and partners to explore specific themes related to food such as:
Urban food production, processing and innovation
Improving access and nutritional quality of food
Improving food environments
Including youth and women in food system activities
Novel governance approaches to improve urban food systems
Circular food systems
Nature, biodiversity and food
Food Cultures and identity
