City of Joburg, South Africa has requested the development of a Water Security Strategy in line with the goals and outcomes of its Growth and Development Strategy 2040. The purpose of the Water Security Strategy will be to provide the City and the people of Johannesburg with a roadmap to improve water security and enable the city’s transition to become a resilient, liveable and sustainable, Water Sensitive City . The purpose of this project is also to assess the potential water-related risks and benefits that face the City of Johannesburg in terms of water availability and usage, ensuring a safe and reliable access to water supply and sanitation.

Measured, quantitative outcomes / project impact
ICLEI Africa is developing a Water Security Strategy with the City of Joburg through the following steps:
-Desktop research to understand the current water system, strategic intervention points and ongoing water-related initiatives and projects
-Baseline workshopping with stakeholders in and around Johannesburg to benchmark the city as a Water Sensitive City using the 34 indicators developed by CRC for Water Sensitive Cities
-Identification of strategic responses with CoJ Steering Committee and drafting of the Water Strategy
-Multistakeholder validation and workshopping of the strategy
-Finalisation and hand-over of the strategy
