What we are doing
- The fossil fuel-based energy production and consumption structure is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating climate change and hindering global sustainable development. - As the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28, 2023) officially agreed to 'transition away from fossil fuels' and 'tripling renewable energy by 2030' as a way to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the global transition to renewable energy is expected to accelerate. - Korea has enacted and is implementing the 'FRAMEWORK ACT ON CARBON NEUTRALITY AND GREEN GROWTH FOR COPING WITH CLIMATE CRISIS' with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and more specific and effective energy transition policy planning and implementation at the local government level is required as a key actor in realizing carbon neutrality. - In the case of Gyeonggi Province, it declared its RE100 vision in April 2023 and set detailed goals and strategic tasks such as achieving 30% of renewable energy generation by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, and other local governments are in the preparation stage for establishing and implementing energy transition policy strategies suitable for their local characteristics. - There is a need to strengthen the administrative capacity of local governments to formulate strategic energy policies, and this network aims to effectively support local governments in their energy transition.
