What we are doing
Local governments are playing an increasingly important role in addressing climate change. Many Asian cities, however, are not only confronting some of the most serious impacts of climate change, but are also having insufficient capacities to solve the problems. In response to the situation, ICLEI East Asia and the Seoul Human Resources Development Center (SHRDC) have been co-organizing training programs since 2016, aiming to provide local government officials in Asia opportunities to learn about well-implemented climate change policies and strategies through Seoul’s experiences.
Through participating in the week-long training program jointly organized by ICLEI East Asia and SHRDC, local governments officials from Asian countries were updated with the latest policies and practices related to climate change mitigation, transportation, waste management, energy transition, and were equipped with ICLEI’s GreenClimateCities methodology, which would be valuable resources for them in designing sustainable development strategies and climate action plans after returning to their cities.

What we are achieving
ICLEI East Asia has been working with the Seoul Human Resources Development Center (SHRDC) since 2016 to annually conduct training programs for local government officials from ICLEI Member and other Asian cities to support their efforts in achieving sustainable and low emission urban development.
The week-long training program is composed of various sessions of policy presentations, site visits and group discussions, with a special focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy transition, transportation, waste management, air pollution management, and GHG emissions inventory. As a key takeaway of the training, participants will draft action plans for their respective local governments combining learning from the training and site visits, as well as their daily tasks. In 2020, the planned training is cancelled due to COVID-19.
As a take-away of the training, participants presented their drafted action plans, combining learnings from the week-long training and their daily tasks.
