What we are doing
TThe WWF One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) is a friendly, international challenge that celebrates national and global frontrunners responding to the climate change crisis. This long-standing challenge reviews cities’ climate actions and ambitions, and assesses whether they align with the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. The more ambitious, credible, strategic and innovative a city’s approaches are, the greater its chances are of being selected as a national or global OPCC winner. Participating cities are thus evaluated on their contribution towards achieving the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. The OPCC process creates leadership and system transformation by helping cities acquire needed skills and strategies to achieve their ambitious goals, by enabling city authorities to understand their emissions and how to face emission reductions (and ultimately how to halve emissions by 2030), and how to define adaptation plans to protect their citizens and local context. WWFs biennial OPCC runs in in tandem with cities’ reporting on the CDP-ICLEI Track, allowing for all of a city’s environmental data to be collected in one place. In addition, activating their CDP-ICLEI Track profile allows cities to participate in workshops and webinars to help improve on climate action efforts, as well as the potential for being globally recognised for climate leadership and action implemented at city level. OPCC aims to highlight diverse challenges and solutions for cities in different parts of the world, while identifying options for networking and collaboration between cities and other stakeholders.
