ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

The WWF One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) is a friendly, international challenge that celebrates national and global frontrunners responding to the climate change crisis. This long-standing challenge reviews cities’ climate actions and ambitions, and assesses whether they align with the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. The more ambitious, credible, strategic and innovative a city’s approaches are, the greater its chances are of being selected as a national or global OPCC winner. Participating cities are thus evaluated on their contribution towards achieving the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. The OPCC process creates leadership and system transformation by helping cities acquire needed skills and strategies to achieve their ambitious goals, by enabling city authorities to understand their emissions and how to face emission reductions (and ultimately how to halve emissions by 2030), and how to define adaptation plans to protect their citizens and local context. WWFs biennial OPCC runs in in tandem with cities’ reporting on the CDP-ICLEI Track, allowing for all of a city’s environmental data to be collected in one place. In addition, activating their CDP-ICLEI Track profile allows cities to participate in workshops and webinars to help improve on climate action efforts, as well as the potential for being globally recognised for climate leadership and action implemented at city level. OPCC aims to highlight diverse challenges and solutions for cities in different parts of the world, while identifying options for networking and collaboration between cities and other stakeholders.

How we are tracking

- Targeted OPCC sign-ups of existing and new cities in both South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa through the CDP ICLEI Track; - Offer technical support to less capacitated cities to report on the CDP-ICLEI Track; - Host 2 Light-touch technical assistance webinars in English and in French on climate financing options for implementation of climate change actions reported on via the OPCC. - Host a mitigation focused webinar on developing and reporting on GHG emission inventories - Develop report "Stories of Change for Africa", that depicts the commitments, current situation, goals and ambitions of African cities linked to the OPCC campaign

What we are achieving

WWF-SA and ICLEI Africa have partnered on the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) to assist African districts, metros and municipalities to submit their climate action plans or projects via the CDP-ICLEI Track, motivating the need, and highlighting opportunities, for both adaptation and mitigation initiatives at the local level. In addition, ICLEI Africa provides technical assistance and training on CDP-ICLEI Track reporting to new OPCC participants, and further assist existing participants as needed on new actions being reported. Disclosing environmental data through CDP provides cities with improved engagement on climate activities, and centralizes data and tracks progress. CDP provides cities with all publicly available data, evaluates cities responses, benchmarks performance against peers, and also finds areas of opportunity or improvement for cities.
