What we are doing
South Asia is undergoing rapid urbanization, driving an increase in energy demand. As the urban population grows, energy usage in cities, including in the building sector, transport, and industry and along with resulting GHG emissions, is expected to rise. The region's extensive urban expansion, combined with its vulnerability to climate change, calls for the development of climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable energy systems with low to zero carbon emissions.
Hence, South Asian cities must prioritize clean and sustainable energy sources to meet their energy needs, aligning with the regional policy priorities aimed at transforming energy supply and demand management.

How we are tracking
• 2 deep-dive cities establish SET institutional structure (City Core Team)
• 2 deep-dive cities adopt SET roadmaps
• 2 pilot projects and 2 investment ready (bankable) projects facilitated (1 for each deep dive city) leading to GHG emission reduction
• Local authorities (at decision making level), technical officials and other key actors in targeted cities, trained in new skills and knowledge for SET

What we are achieving
The project aims to enhance institutional frameworks and technical capacities within targeted local governments across South Asia towards achieving local climate and energy targets while reinforcing energy security by enabling a local “Sustainable Energy Transition (SET)”. This transition will include Renewable Energy (RE) integration and Energy Efficiency (EE) improvements and support a SET ecosystem through capacity building, engagement with the private sector, and skill development of local communities.
The key activities include:
• Develop SET roadmap and implementation plan for 2 deep-dive project cities
• Facilitate implementation of 2 pilot demonstration projects in municipal services or e-mobility (1 for each deep dive city)
• Facilitate development of 2 bankable projects in municipal services or e-mobility sectors (1 for each deep dive city)
• Support cities to prepare and submit 3 Project Information Notes (PIN)
• Strengthen local technical capacities for SET implementation through training and peer learning, with equal opportunities for gender inclusive participation.
• Knowledge dissemination workshops and peer-to-peer exchanges between US and South Asian cities
