What we are doing
ICLEI Africa is supporting Steve Tswhete Local Municipality (South Africa), which is situated in the heartland of South Africa's coal belt, to enable it's just transition.
The project is working to:
(a) build capacity in the municipality to tackle the just transition in a way that is fair, equitable and just;
(b) enable policy change via the co-development of a just transition focused chapter within the core municipal policy document (the IDP);
(c) co-develop a methodology for the identification and development of just transition projects;
(d) co-develop 3 concept notes on 3 prioritised just transition projects, to assist the municipality in unlocking finance for the implementation of such; and
(e) hosting an Investment Summit/ Workshop where municipal officials will engage with potential donors/ banks/ DFIs that they can work with in taking their just transition projects to the next stage(s) of bankability.

What we are achieving
- ICLEI Africa is working with Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (South Africa) to tackle the just transition, in a context of high fossil fuel/ coal dependence, as well as clear recognition that the just transition is upon us and that the municipality needs to lead the way in unlocking the opportunities linked to such, as well as manage potential losses/ concerns.
- ICLEI Africa is utilising co-production methodologies that allow the municipality to be fully engaged throughout and to own the project outcomes and outputs. This involves harnessing the expertise housed within ICLEI Africa and partner organisations to inspire and guide the municipality, and not place unnecessary burdens on already over-stretched municipal staff, while ensuring that we 'listen to hear', and allow the project to constantly serve the evolving needs of the municipality, within the national South African and global context related to the just transition and climate change.
