What we did
Over the years, local government involvement in the G7 process has steadily evolved. In 2021, under the UK presidency, local governments from G7 countries came together to form the Urban 7 (U7) initiative, aimed at fostering continuous dialogue between G7 nations and municipal leaders. Since its inception, the U7 has played a key role in connecting G7 nations and local governments, enabling deeper discussions and collaboration on global sustainability issues, including climate change. In 2023, under the Japanese presidency, Saitama City took a leading role in advancing the G7 urban agenda. As part of these efforts, the city expressed a strong interest in hosting an event to showcase the latest progress and initiatives on urban decarbonization and multi-level collaboration among G7 nations and beyond. However, lacking the experience to fully direct and facilitate such an event, they sought support from ICLEI Japan, who collaborated with them to successfully organize the event.
