What we are doing
Air and noise pollution present significant challenges in urban areas. The adoption of electric buses (e-buses) offers a promising solution to address air quality issues, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance the reliability and accessibility of public transport systems. However, the transition to e-buses faces obstacles, particularly in the Global South, where industries and governments grapple with adopting this technology at scale. To overcome these challenges, cities must have a comprehensive understanding of the barriers to electric bus adoption, design informed plans, and take decisive actions. Companies should invest in clean technologies, and national governments must strongly commit to decarbonizing public transport. In this context, the TUMI E-Bus Mission is crucial in supporting cities in their transition to electric bus deployment, contributing to the advancement and widespread adoption of e-bus fleets in response to the growing global demand. Electric buses represent a critical solution for emerging economies such as Brazil and India, tasked with meeting the rising demand for urban transportation while mitigating environmental impacts. Their importance lies in several key areas: emissions reduction, lower operating costs, expanding urban mobility, domestic manufacturing and international leadership. To maximize the benefits of electric buses, these countries in emerging economies need to establish a supportive ecosystem, including charging infrastructure, fleet management, and workforce training. With the right policies and investments, electric buses can significantly contribute to the sustainable development of urban transportation in India, Brazil, and other emerging economies.
