ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

Air and noise pollution present significant challenges in urban areas. The adoption of electric buses (e-buses) offers a promising solution to address air quality issues, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance the reliability and accessibility of public transport systems. However, the transition to e-buses faces obstacles, particularly in the Global South, where industries and governments grapple with adopting this technology at scale. To overcome these challenges, cities must have a comprehensive understanding of the barriers to electric bus adoption, design informed plans, and take decisive actions. Companies should invest in clean technologies, and national governments must strongly commit to decarbonizing public transport. In this context, the TUMI E-Bus Mission is crucial in supporting cities in their transition to electric bus deployment, contributing to the advancement and widespread adoption of e-bus fleets in response to the growing global demand. Electric buses represent a critical solution for emerging economies such as Brazil and India, tasked with meeting the rising demand for urban transportation while mitigating environmental impacts. Their importance lies in several key areas: emissions reduction, lower operating costs, expanding urban mobility, domestic manufacturing and international leadership. To maximize the benefits of electric buses, these countries in emerging economies need to establish a supportive ecosystem, including charging infrastructure, fleet management, and workforce training. With the right policies and investments, electric buses can significantly contribute to the sustainable development of urban transportation in India, Brazil, and other emerging economies.

What we are achieving

The TUMI E-Bus Mission, in addition to its engagement with 20 deep-dive cities, has established the TUMI E-Bus Network, a collaborative platform to share experiences across cities and accelerate e-bus adoption. This Network is a learning hub for cities committed to advancing e-bus fleets within public transportation systems. Members benefit from shared knowledge, resources, and exclusive training opportunities, fostering peer-to-peer exchanges. The Network's primary goal is to promote best practices in e-bus transition, setting a precedent for incoming members. Through this TUMI project, ICLEI aims to support cities in shaping financeable e-bus projects to empower the TUMI e-Bus Mission—Network Cities, primarily focusing on Brazil and India, in their journey towards bus electrification. ICLEI supports city-level e-bus deployment through tailored technical assistance, identification of financeable project ideas, and active participation in governance structures. Activity Package 1 updates needs assessments, provides customized support to selected cities—particularly in India and Brazil—and facilitates knowledge exchange. Activity Package 2 helps cities shape and screen e-bus projects, integrate them into financing pipelines, and prepare investor briefings and training sessions. Activity Package 3 ensures coordination through regular engagement in governance meetings and ongoing progress reporting.
