What we did
There is a growing need to apply systems approaches to improving urban food systems. Much of the focus on food security in Africa tends to revolve around production and does not necessarily consider the full food value chain (production, transportation, processing, distribution, consumption, loss and waste), nor do many food security approaches contemplate the multiple policy arenas that are important for promoting holistic food systems interventions: food availability, food access, food stability, food utilization, food safety, public health, economic development, waste management, and climate change and environmental degradation. Nevertheless, while African cities showcase multiple food security and nutrition challenges, there are also numerous examples of successful food systems interventions that promote healthy diets, urban agriculture, improved food safety, and the like. There is a need to identify and document the approaches applied in African urban contexts and to match these investment opportunities with current donor and financial institution priorities.
