What we did
Eswatini aims to presents its revised, second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) by reaffirming the country’s commitment to fighting climate change. The country intends to communicate that climate resilient, sustainable and equitable growth as its priority for this decade while taking into cognizance the need for progressive targets to respond to the global commitment for enhanced ambitions to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals.
The goal of the revision is to align and harmonize ESwatini's NDC with other relevant regional and global processes to promote policy coherence, e.g. the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and post COVID-19 recovery.
The second NDC of Eswatini discusses climate change mitigation and adaptation of strategies that addresses the challenges posed by the climate change as well as contributes to the Eswatini’s economic recovery and social development, relevant for both national and subnational level.

How we tracked
• Review of academic and grey literature pertaining to mitigation planning in Eswatini
• Support the International Mitigation Expert to assess the policy and institutional framework for ongoing mitigation programmes/actions in Eswatini and assess gaps
• Participate in stakeholder consultation workshop to validate the mitigation related findings
• Support international mitigation and adaptation expert by developing and drafting ‘nature based solutions (NbS)’ for building adaptive capacity and resilience
• Assist international mitigation and adaptation expert by preparing 4 to 5 regional / country case studies focused on private sector investment for adaptation and mitigation actions (e.g., financing instruments for climate action)
• Support the international mitigation expert by undertaking research on leading MRV practices in Southern African Development Community (SADC) and providing information and clarity on indicators

What we achieved
Support is provided through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Climate Promise project and technical assistance from ICLEI Africa to the NDC revision process under the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), NDC Partnership for the country of Eswatini. ICLEI Africa has offered technical support via mitigation expertise to the process, which includes deliverables related to the overall revision process, specifically via:
• Inputs on policy and institutional framework for mitigation actions across relevant sectors, including waste, IPPU, energy and livestock
• Inputs on business case for private sector
• Inputs on mitigation targets and their alignment with SDGs
• Review NDC mitigation chapter and provide recommendations
