What we are doing
Following its first phase (2012-2015), the project will consolidate city level work in the four existing Urban-LEDS countries (Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa) and geographically extend activities into four new countries (Bangladesh, Colombia, Laos and Rwanda) as well as engaging a wider range of European cities. It addresses the large and growing share of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by cities, and seeks to reduce GHGs in the framework of integrated climate action (with climate change adaptation and resilience as a sub-priority). Urban LEDS II is intended to support the European Union’s climate change mitigation priority and it is in line with mayor international climate agreements. The overall objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in partner countries and cities. by supporting local governments’ planning and implementation of climate action that effectively contribute to global climate change mitigation and adaptation and also provide access to secure, affordable, and sustainable energy while facilitating multilevel governance. Addressing growing cities in four emerging economy countries the project intensively supports 8 Model Cities to formulate and adopt Urban Low Emission Development Strategies. They in turn share those experiences within their countries to Satellite Cities that observe, benefit from project activities, and share their own experiences. European Cities are engaged to share their knowledge and expertise, as well as gaining new ideas to raise their own level of ambition. Finally the project mobilize cities to commit to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM); exploring access to financing; and supporting multilevel governance. The project will also support the improvement of effective monitoring and reporting systems through an integrated MRV.
