What we are doing
On a global scale, cities are and continue to be key players in the global fight against climate change. While cities occupy only 2% of the planet’s landmass, in terms of climate impact they exert an enormous footprint by consuming over 65% of the world’s energy and accounting for 60% to 80% of global CO2 emissions depending on the estimates1 . The need for integrated climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in cities is anticipated in many local, regional and national strategies. However, the current pace of transformation is too slow to meet the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement. Consequently, cities’ pathways towards climate-neutrality and net-zero urban environments require enhanced co-development of multiple elements including technological and social innovations, new governance approaches, capacity building across sectors and integrated approaches, access to appropriate finance and funding, and regulatory actions at local and national level.
