Global District Energy in Cities Initiative
Recognizing that modern district energy helps cities meet energy efficiency, zero energy building and renewable energy objectives, the District Energy in Cities initiative supports local governments to build know-how and implement enabling policies that accelerate investment in low carbon and climate-resilient district energy systems.
As one of six accelerators of the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform, the District Energy in Cities initiative aims to double the rate of energy efficiency improvements for heating and cooling in buildings by 2030. It addresses the urgent need to reduce energy demand and shift to efficient and low carbon sources consistent with global climate and energy ambitions.
The Global District Energy in Cities initiative provides capacity building and technical assistance to local governments and their partners to develop enabling policies, address barriers, unlock investment and scale-up modern district energy in cities. The initiative is working to raise awareness on the opportunities and multiple benefits of district energy.
Aims
Global District Energy in Cities partners aim to build know-how and implement enabling policies that accelerate investment in low carbon and climate-resilient district energy systems, raise awareness of how district energy generates multiple socio-economic and environmental benefits, demonstrate viability through pilot projects and create an enabling regulatory framework to unlock private sector investment and ensure sustainable implementation.

Activities
The initiative partners:
- Replicate approaches in different cities in the same region to foster industry growth.
- Facilitate the exchange experiences between city and country partners on district energy innovation and best practice through a cities-for-cities twinning process.
- Provide capacity building and technical assistance to local governments and their partners to develop enabling policies, address barriers, unlock investment and scale-up modern district energy in cities.
Participating cities
The initiative currently provides technical support to cities in four pilot countries and ten replication countries.
