Goyang Special City has consistently monitored their progress while introducing key initiatives to address climate change. It has installed micro-ecosystem water circulation facilities, registered Janghang Wetland as a Ramsar Site to conserve carbon sinks, and launched a 1.05 million tree-planting campaign to enhance urban forests and improve citizens’ quality of life.
The city developed micro-ecosystem water circulation facilities as a solution to utilize underground runoff from subway sections and large buildings. This initiative has been widely praised for its effectiveness in restoring urban ecosystems, reducing fine dust, and mitigating the heat island effect. These facilities include wetland springs using underground water, cooling and clean roads that spray underground water to combat heat and fine dust, rainwater-saving boxes that irrigate flower gardens, and rooftop greening at Ilsanseo-gu Office, creating ecological rest spaces in the city.
