Sustainable energy
ICLEI empowers local and regional governments to lead the transition to sustainable, inclusive, and climate-neutral energy systems. We support cities in scaling renewables, improving efficiency, and integrating clean energy into development plans, all while aligning with SDGs and NDCs.
Through capacity building, policy guidance, and technical support, we help local governments reduce emissions, expand energy access, and tackle energy poverty with practical, community-driven solutions.

Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Rio Grande do Sul is Brazil’s southernmost state, home to nearly 11 million people across over 490 municipalities. With its capital in Porto Alegre, the state is a major economic hub and plays a leading role in advancing sustainable urban and regional development. Following the devastating 2024 floods, the state partnered with ICLEI to launch a climate compliance and resilience initiative that now supports more than 440 municipalities in developing climate action plans, integrating climate regulations, assessing risks, and advancing mitigation and adaptation.
