Towards healthier, more equitable, and resilient cities

Sustainable food systems

Food is deeply connected to every aspect of sustainable urban development, linked to multiple sectors from energy and water to infrastructure, the economy, climate, health, and well-being. With impacts spanning the public, private, and civil society spheres, transforming food systems requires coordinated action and shared responsibility across local, regional, and national levels.

Bold leaders tackling the climate emergency

Six years of Daring Cities

Co-convened by ICLEI and the Federal City of Bonn, Germany, Daring Cities serves as a pivotal platform for local and regional government leaders to foster multilevel and collective climate action to tackle the climate emergency.

This year, Daring Cities 2025 marks the sixth edition of the annual event, building on the legacy established since its inception in 2020. Under the theme “Stronger national climate plans through multilevel action,” Daring Cities 2025 will support local and regional governments to influence global climate negotiations.  The agenda is packed with dialogues, workshops, and high-level roundtables throughout the year, all aimed at promoting leadership, knowledge exchange, and the implementation of ambitious climate strategies towards UNFCCC COP30 in Belém, Brazil, and beyond.

Featured city

Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei

An ICLEI Member since 2006, Kaohsiung City is the leading industrial and port hub located on the island of Taiwan. Committed to ambitious climate goals, the city aims to cut CO₂ emissions by 80% by 2050.

Kaohsiung launched the first Net-Zero Industrial Alliances, supporting industrial cities in reducing emissions by leveraging larger enterprises to aid smaller ones. It also enacted the Net-Zero Development Ordinance, mandating net-zero emissions by 2050, and founded the Net-Zero Institute to develop expertise in green technology.

Building on its success with the EcoMobility Alliance, a network of 30 cities advancing sustainable mobility, Kaohsiung introduced the Kaohsiung-ICLEI Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Community of Practice in 2024. This initiative aims to be a hub for knowledge sharing and exchange on critical climate neutrality issues, particularly across cities in East Asia and the Asia Pacific.
