CITY-BUSINESS ACCELERATOR | KAOHSIUNG 2026

Bringing global urban nature solutions to Kaohsiung

The Kaohsiung–ICLEI City-Business Accelerator (CiBiX) will bring together the City of Kaohsiung and a selected cohort of innovative companies on 2 September 2026 to explore solutions for a greener, cooler and more resilient city.

Following an international Call for Solutions, selected companies will present approaches spanning urban nature planning and management, nature intelligence and monitoring, urban forestry, water management, and climate-resilient design.

Through direct exchange with Kaohsiung City Government, international experts and public-sector partners, CiBiX aims to turn promising solutions into practical opportunities for collaboration and implementation.

the challenge

Expanding Kaohsiung’s Green Lung

Throughout July 2026, global and local companies were invited to submit innovative, open-ended technological and business solutions to help the city map, maintain, and scale its urban forest ecosystem. Solutions could include, but were not limited to:

  • Forestry inventory modeling and management
  • Micro-climate and heat mapping
  • Cooling implementation & materials
  • Carbon sink enhancement and tracking
  • Biodiversity-driven maintenance standards
  • Public-Private Partnership models
  • Creative ESG frameworks
a proven model

The City Business Accelerator (CiBiX)

CiBiX is a program developed by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability that assists cities to solve real-world urban sustainability challenges by connecting them with innovative private-sector solutions.

After successful editions in cities across the globe, CiBiX arrives in Kaohsiung, opening a direct line between city leaders and the global business and innovation community to accelerate Nature-based Solutions for urban resilience.

Meet the shortlisted companies

  • Arkadiah combines satellite imagery, aerial and terrestrial LiDAR, field data and AI to measure and monitor natural and built environments at scale — from forests and urban green assets to terrain, flood risk and infrastructure.

  • Arup combines engineering, environmental science and data-driven tools to help cities address climate and nature challenges, including heat risks, urban greening and biodiversity.

  • CoCoTree Technology combines satellite and drone data, AI and ecological information to assess carbon stocks, nature-related risks and changes in ecosystems and species.

  • Ding Tai Co., Ltd. / Chi Hsiang Engineering Co., Ltd. develops technologies that support on-site water infiltration, storage, purification and reuse, helping address flooding, water scarcity and pollution while contributing to urban greening and heat reduction.

  • EcoMatcher combines field data and digital technologies to track individual trees and forests, making their location, characteristics, and impact transparent, traceable, engaging, and accessible

  • greehill  helps cities manage urban trees as living infrastructure using LiDAR, AI, and digital twins to improve resilience, safety, maintenance, and climate-informed decision-making at city scale.

  • Green Lab Asia works with experts across different fields to research, analyze and scientifically design environmental concepts and develop them into prototypes ready for real-world implementation.

  • PlanIT Geo combines management software, remote sensing analysis, field services and consulting to help organizations map, assess, plan for and manage urban trees and green spaces through a global partner network.

  • REWOOD connects tree risk management with the circular use of woody materials, biochar and wood vinegar applications, product design, and environmental education. Its integrated approach helps cities strengthen urban forest resilience, advance resource circularity, and create local green jobs.

Nature-positive city

Kaohsiung’s ambitious targets

In June 2025, Kaohsiung became one of the first cities in East Asia to sign the Berlin Urban Nature Pact, committing to become nature-positive by 2030. The city backs that commitment with binding local policy: 30% emissions cut by 2030, net-zero by 2050, and a dedicated city committee coordinating climate action across departments.

This international commitment requires the city to develop a local action plan by mid-2026 and work toward the broader goal of achieving harmony with nature by 2050. Given this tight timeline, mobilizing digital innovations, social resources, and corporate engagement has become an urgent governance priority.

The City also chairs the Kaohsiung-ICLEI Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Community of Practice (ComP), a regional network connecting the Kaohsiung’s sustainability agenda to peer cities and international expertise. Few industrial cities are building this kind of infrastructure, policy, and partnership network at the same time. That is what makes Kaohsiung a serious testing ground for solutions.
