The Province of Barcelona, one of four within larger Catalonia, on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The Province is home to 5.5 million residents, the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area of 1.6 residents and a thriving tourist industry. While the nearby mountains and sea are popular attractions, the dense and quickly urbanizing cities within the Province, such as Barcelona, face serious spatial constraints. Barcelona is a strong proponent of sustainability, marked by it's commitment to Agenda 21 and over a decade's worth of innovative educational programs. The School Agenda 21 Program, as a part of the Agenda 21 initiative, is taught in over half of Barcelona's public schools, empowering youth through sustainable education and action.
