The Association of Regions of Morocco (ARM) and ICLEI Africa signed a memorandum of understanding at COP29, celebrating a strong commitment to sustainable urban development in Morocco on 18 November 2024. This strategic partnership will enhance the ability of Moroccan regions to tackle climate change and promote sustainable, resilient cities.
The agreement will facilitate an exchange of experiences and best practices between ARM and ICLEI Africa, while also collaborating to secure funding for urban sustainability projects. The focus will be on ICLEI Africa’s five key pathways: resilience, low emissions, nature, equity, and circular development.
The signing of this agreement at COP29 sends a powerful message of Morocco’s leadership in the fight against climate change and its commitment to local sustainable development. This partnership promises to bolster the capacity of Moroccan regions to address environmental challenges and build a more sustainable future for all.
The MoU was signed by President of the Association of Regions of Morocco, Mbarka Bouaida, and ICLEI Deputy Secretary General and ICLEI Africa Regional Director, Kobie Brand. The signing meeting was attended by ICLEI Vice President, Mayor of Chefchaouen Mohamed Sefiani, President of the Regional Council of Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Rachid El Abdi and President of the Region Béni Mellal-Khénifra, Adil Barakat and others.
