ICLEI and the World Water Council (WWC), an international multi-stakeholder organization with 260 member organizations spanning 52 countries across five continents, are partnering to collaboratively address global water challenges and climate-related risks, enhance sustainable water and sanitation management, and promote effective governance at local, regional, and global levels.
ICLEI supports local and regional governments to collaborate for a multilevel governance approach on the realization of equitable water and sanitation services provision. The WWC aims to elevate water as a global political priority, fostering sustainable and equitable development worldwide.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the partnership was signed on 9 January 2025 by Loïc Fauchon, WWC President, and Gino Van Begin, ICLEI Secretary General.
“We are excited to be expanding our scope of work with a trusted and esteemed organization such as the WWC. Together, our work can help bring greater awareness and action around the multifaceted and vitally important issue of water and how this resource is leveraged by local governments,” said Gino Van Begin, ICLEI Secretary General.
Secretary General Van Begin further emphasized, “Our work relies not only on local and regional governments but also on the cooperation of the vast network of non-governmental organizations that help bring meaningful impacts to our network and the work we are doing within our organization.”
Recognizing the vital role of local and regional governments in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6, which aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all, ICLEI and WWC reaffirm their commitment to supporting local authorities in addressing water-related challenges, facilitating knowledge exchange, and sharing best practices to promote sustainable urban communities worldwide.
