Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has decided to join the ICLEI family, and is set to become our 25th Member in Türkiye—the country with the largest ICLEI membership in Europe.
The announcement came by ICLEI Vice President Mayor Mohamed Sefiani of Chefchaouen, Morocco, during the International Workshop on World Water Day held on 21–22 March 2025 in Muğla, Türkiye.
Under the theme “Combating Climate Change: Mitigation and Adaptation,” the workshop brought together local leaders, experts, and organizations to address pressing water and climate challenges. Mayor Sefiani commended Mayor Ahmet Aras of Muğla for his visionary leadership and highlighted the significance of Muğla’s engagement in fostering Mediterranean-wide collaboration within the ICLEI network.
ICLEI Director of Global Advocacy Yunus Arikan and Senior Expert Jurijs Grizans provided further inputs at the event regarding collaboration at global and European processes, respectively.
During the event, Dr. Şiir Kılkış, IPCC Vice-Chair of IPCC’s Working Group III on mitigation and one of the Lead Authors of the upcoming IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, reminded participants that cities are both a major challenge and a key solution in combating climate change. She underscored the importance of integrated, locally relevant strategies to reduce emissions and build resilience, aligning with ICLEI’s mission to support sustainable urban development worldwide.
ICLEI looks forward to collaborating with the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and all our other Members to advance sustainable solutions that address climate challenges and promote resilient communities.
